Comparison is the Thief of Joy…For Reals People

The title of this one above is one of my favorite “in yo face” quotes…cause it is so damn true!

Why do we do this? We look at what other people are doing (like on FB or any social media) and compare it to what we are doing…to how we are feeling. Ugh…instant contentment killer.

Most women, when another woman walks into a room, do a complete comparison to ourselves and her and our mood can completely change because of this.

When someone does something really cool, instead of being happy for them, we think, “I deserve to do that too…what makes her/him so special?”

We see a movie, read a magazine…we see people who look better than us, have more than we do…we compare. I wish I had that watch…I wish my ass was that small…my face that beautiful…that house is amazing compared to the one that I live in…etc. etc. We rob ourselves of so much joy.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

I would say that one of the most important lessons that I have learned over the years is this: I am not everyone else. I am not like everyone else. I don’t WANT to be like anyone else. I am not going to do what everyone else is doing. I am just going to do my own thing. Fu<& what everyone else thinks. Stand out. Don’t fit in.

My gifts are way different than yours. We were all born with God-given gifts and they are definitely not all of the same. We should embrace our differences and appreciate them vs. compare them to what others have…cause…well, it robs us of being grateful for what we DO have.

Instead of focusing on the things I don’t have, I have changed my mindset to be grateful for what I have been given in this life. Even when I had nothing. My day begins with it…writing in my Gratitude Journal. When you focus on your blessings…something cool happens…the rest of the shit doesn’t matter. I don’t give a flying F if you are skinnier than me, or prettier than I am…I am my own person and I am good with myself.

Now don’t get me wrong here…I do certainly look at what other people are doing and what they have…and sometimes, it motivates ME to do better at something because I see that they can do it…but that is very different than comparing myself to them and letting it rob my joy. I have been enlightened enough to know that I don’t know everything that has happened in their lives to get them where they are today. All I know is ME. What am I doing? What have I been blessed with?

If you have more than I do, that’s awesome. I am good with what I have. If I want more or if I want to make a change in my life, it’s because of MY decision…not because I have compared myself to you.

You have to focus on what makes YOU unique instead of wishing you were someone else. Make a list of the “amazing” things about you. Start a gratitude Journal to focus on what blessings you do have. Realize that when comparison rears its ugly ass head, you are comparing yourself to an unrealistic target.

You can’t measure your life against someone else’s. Geesh, you won’t ever be happy if you do that!

I guarantee you that you are so much more gifted than you think you are right now. So much more blessed than you feel right now. So much more beautiful than you believe you are.

That’s all I got for today!

Count your blessings and who give a shit about what everyone else has.
